Mr. Ronnie Bissessar,
Head of Chambers, Lawgivers
Mr. Ronnie Bissessar is an Attorney- at- Law in private practice and is the Head of Chambers of Lawgivers. He is also a Mediator (Civil Non-Family Matters) certified by the Mediation Board of Trinidad and Tobago and the University of Windsor Faculty of Law and has served as Arbitrator in Commercial Claims.
Mr. Bissessar is the President of the Trinidad and Tobago Heart Foundation, a Director of the InterAmerican Heart Foundation (based in Texas, USA) and the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (based in Barbados) and the Deputy Chair of the Trinidad and Tobago Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance. He is a former Vice President of the Assembly of Southern Lawyers and Past President of the Rotary Club of San Fernando South and has received a Paul Harris Fellow which is Rotary’s highest honour. Mr. Bissessar is also a Director of the UWI Development and Endowment Fund and he has served in numerous leadership capacities in respect of non-governmental organisations, charities and philanthropic groups.
Mr. Bissessar is a Senior Ordinary Member of the Council of the Law Association and is a former Chairman of the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute which is a non-profit foundation whose principal objective is to encourage corporate governance best practices regionally; Mr. Bissessar is co-founder of the Trinidad and Tobago Legal Network which promotes and provides continuing legal education to members of the legal profession.
Mr. Bissessar has presented on various aspects of Corporate Governance in Business Law at the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business and was a Lecturer in Corporate Practice and Procedure at the Hugh Wooding Law School. Mr. Bissessar has presented scholarly papers on Corporate Governance for the Barbados Law Association and the Barbados Stock Exchange and has provided dedicated Governance Training to a wide range of incoming Boards of Directors. Mr. Bissessar is also an External Examiner of the University of the West Indies.
Mr. Bissessar is a Barrister at Law (the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn) and Head of Chambers of Lawgivers, Attorneys at Law; Mr. Bissessar, as Counsel, has represented the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in contentious proceedings involving the Caricom Commission at the Caribbean Court of Justice. He practices extensively in commercial and corporate law and advises widely on corporate and commercial exposure and risk mitigation.
In 1985 Mr. Bissessar was awarded the Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the University of the West Indies and in 1988 was awarded an LL B from the University of London. In 1993 he received the Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School.
Mr. Bissessar is married to Dr. Sabita Harrikissoon and they have two children, Sveva (15) and Seth (8).
